Rembrandt van Rijn Unit Study | Art, History & Worldview for Grades 3 to 8

A complete, cross-curricular study of Rembrandt that counts for art, history, geography, and worldview, and can be taught by a parent who has never taught art history.

Many homeschool parents freeze at art history. There is no textbook, no workbook, no clear place to start, so it gets skipped. This study fixes that.

It takes one artist and turns him into a real study across your whole week. Your kids learn to read a painting, place the Dutch Golden Age on a timeline, trace a real journey across a map, and, if you want it, think through how an artist reads scripture. The Teacher Guide hands you the background, the exact questions to ask, and the likely answers tucked in parentheses, so you are never caught without something to say. The Student Pack hands your child every page they need. You don't have to add anything to it.

The whole study hangs on one idea a child can hold onto: Rembrandt lit only what mattered. Follow the light, and you have found what he saw. From there it opens outward into history (Rembrandt was a boy in Leiden the same years the Pilgrims lived there before the Mayflower), geography (a real elephant's journey from Sri Lanka to Amsterdam), science (how a single light source works), and writing.

What's included:

  • A 40-page Teacher Guide: read-aloud biography, the full background you teach from, six deep-dive studies, discussion facilitation with answers, cross-curricular connections, an essay track, a capstone, and assessment
  • A 38-page Student Pack: every printable page, including biography and timeline pages, the reusable picture-study page, six deep-study pages, five hands-on projects, two illustrated maps, writing and copywork, the capstone, and a completion checklist
  • Three ways to run it: a one-week intensive, a three-week rhythm, or a six-week Friday study
  • Five hands-on projects, from a dramatic self-portrait to a light-and-shadow science lab
  • A worldview thread that is genuinely optional and clearly bounded

Who it's for: Homeschool families with kids grades 3 to 8, with adapt-up notes through grade 12. Works for one child or a multi-age family teaching together. Strong fit for co-ops.

Uses the Rembrandt Art Study Cards. The 18-card set is the visual spine of the study. Grab it separately, or save with the bundle.

Format: Two instant-download PDFs (Teacher Guide and Student Pack). Print the Student Pack once and you are ready.
